Andrew and Robin

Andrew and Robin

Andrew Rayner was raised in the rolling hills of South West England. After Cambridge University he worked in journalism, finance and television in London with periods in Amsterdam, New Zealand, Johannesburg, the Philippines and Turkey. He's run the Pamplona bulls and a marathon, competed on skis, horses and skeleton, and sailed 50,000 miles. Now he farms fruit on a Pacific island, Maui, with his architect wife Robin, whose fine paintings and maps embellish Reach for Paradise.

Working on Reach for Paradise was a joy. Preparing the manuscript, I could re-live the privilege of traveling the most wonderful section of our planet, drifting among the Pacific people who taught me island traditions and generosity. The beauty of the islands and the ocean was fresh on the page. I reveled in divorce from rules and officials, from news of disasters and human stupidities, relishing the perspective of older ways. This was a memory to share, of freedom and delight.
